Essentially, this was the perfect device for me.I already have a high powered laptop, a good tablet, etc.What I needed was something that could act as a thin client through vmware (it can), and is otherwise mostly a browser.This fits that bill.Because it is inexpensive, it isn’t a total tragedy if it is stolen or lost.Because it is secure, I don’t have to worry about my data being exposed (except for the gmail account, and the one I use for access is not my primary gmail).When I am on a trip, this is the right machine for move photos from my camera (It has an SD slot) to my USB drives.It is also thin and light, and I am loving the ChromeOS touch pad.So far the battery life is very good, and they keyboard is spaced out enough to make typing relatively comfortable (In fact, I’m writing this review on it).
Obviously, this isn’t a real computer.Games (other than browser ones, I guess.I don’t play them) are pretty much off the table.You cannot load traditional applications, just browser apps and extensions.Video quality is fair, at best.For me, these are all pluses, since I don’t have anyone wishing to borrow it. I just got my this C740 last week and have been playing around with it most of the weekend.This is the 2 GB RAM/16 GB SSD version of the C740.I have been very happy with it – I like the speed, battery life, and Chrome OS in general.However, there are two graphics/display related issues I have noticed and I’m wondering if anyone else is experiencing this.
The most significant issue I’ve had is that occasionally the display image gets jumbled up.It’s like the screen is cut up into blocks and scrambled like a jigsaw puzzle.It could happen anywhere in the system, even at the login screen, so I’m thinking it’s possibly driver or hardware related.It’s usually just a flicker, but the image has actually stabilized in a broken state.It generally seems to fix itself pretty quick, may even miss it if you blink, but there was one time that I had to reboot (power off/on) before it resolved.This issue seems most likely to happen when I am in Chrome RDP, but I can’t tell if it is specific to that app since it happens all over the system, even when the app is closed.
The other issue I have seems to be specific to a website that uses an HTML5 canvas to display a remote desktop.The issue happens within the canvas where icons will get random white blocks around them.White blocks may also appear within the canvas, sometimes without me touching anything.I have not had this issue in any other browsers, including my wife’s C720.
So I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced issues like this on the C740, in any other chromebooks, or specifically with the Chrome RDP app.I really like this Chromebook, but am considering returning for exchange based on these issues.My wife’s C720 does not seem to have these issues.

Painfully slow. You are able to use Google play store but most apps won’t work at all or are so buggy. Was hoping this would have been a good purchase but I am considering returning it. System shuts down randomly. Can’t even use Facebook without the chromebook pooping out. I had TWO of these break. The first one I had one of the keys stopped responding two weeks in. Ordered another one and the first day I had it I realized the track pad was making a funny sound. Continued to use it for five minutes and then noticed that the mouse was not responding correctly when using the track pad.
Purchased 26 machines for our elementary school STEM lab. Have been operating flawlessly since January 2107. At this stage it's too early to tell much about long-term reliability. We opted for 8 gig of RAM, Google management software, and white gloves service prior to delivery.Hindsight being 20/20, 4gig of memory would probably have been fine.
This is a very nice Chromebook for the price.I bought this for my 8 year old son to do his school work and apps on so I get the best of both worlds.It's a little bulky using it as a tablet but he has no problems.The battery life is great too.

Love this for a portable chromebook.This isn't my primary computer, but I do use it daily.It has been great.Only downside is the 16GB storage isn't enough to install many apps.
This thing is crashing now every day, up to 10 times a day. Meaning, once every hour, this thing reboots itself! It started crashing within 2 months of getting it and I've had it worked on once already but they couldn't figure it out. Luckily they only charged me $25. So I guess I should have bought the extended warranty for $70. My guess is either the Celeron CPU is crap or they used crappy RAM. Very disappointed in this product. I spent $330 for 2 months of good use out of it.
My son got this for his school and the first time, the arrow key came out, the second time, the screen broke, and now, the bottom right side of the screen keeps flickering on and off. I do not suggest buying

Looks like an Acer C720 Chromebook, but looks are deceiving because this exceeds it in every way.Its faster, has better battery life, the screen looks brighter, the body looks better finished with a bit of brushed finish to it; it feels heftier and more solid, reinforcement in the hinges and in the lid, and even the keyboard feels better, adding a bit of a cushion at the end of the keypress.Everything about it is improved over the C720 which by itself is already an excellent Chromebook.In my opinion, this is probably among the best, if not the best, small Chromebook in the market.The thing is the C740 tends to be marketed for educatoinal and institutional channels rather than consumer retail like its sibling CB3 and CB5 does.One important thing is that every small Chromebook now either comes with an ARM processor or a Bay Trail Celeron processor, but this has the 5th generation Broadwell 3205U which annihilates them in performance (over 14,000 in Octane scores over 8,500 for the Bay Trails) and still gives a day's use of battery life, better even than the C720's Haswell Celeron 2955U.
I've had this device for nearly a month now. Absolutely love it! The updated processor outperforms the C720 by enough to merit a purchase for this one instead. From my selected seller, This was an education unit. For those interested in either device, education vs consumer, the education model does not have any lack in performance.
Physically the device is quite solid, similarly to how a dell feels inside, but is contrasted to the plastic-y shell. My only grip with its appearance.
The track pad is a very smooth plastic that takes a little bit of time to get used too. I mention this for those familiar with the setting in windows known as "precision" or for older versions, "accelerated" mouse control. On the mac this would be a setting that cannot be changed, as far as i've known. It seems this is a chrome OS feature and not as a result of the track pad. As some may have read, the tap to click feature does require a bit more pressure than a standard setup. Such as a macbooks trackpad.
The screens colors are acceptable, and definitely usable. Viewing angles vertically however are quite varying. Horizontally theres a little bit more flexibility.
SSD from what i've read online is replace/upgradable. The ram is not. The screws are also NOT covered with warranty stickers. I think this is a education specific version of the c740
All in all i'm extremely excited to be using this device, and love the chrome os experience!
PS: be sure to understand what the Chrome OS has to offer. compared to Windows, Mac etc.

I bought my first one in April 2017. After 14 months the left hinge had broken and the monitor pulled away from the computer. I travel nearly full time and the computer travels with me. It is not as if it sits on a desk.
However, the replacement computer --again a C-740---I bought only 8 months ago and again it has a broken left hinge.
Looking online I see many, many people with the left hinge problem dating back to 2014 with this model.
So now I am going to purchase another Chromebook---but not from Acer. Clearly they have a design problem.
I bought 2 of these for my elementary school kids. Since schools were closed for the rest of the year due to covid-19 and it was a new requirement to do online learning, This is a good way for them to access google classroom. It’s very simple for the kids and not as many options like a regular laptop would have to adjust settings, and do things that a curious child may mess up on a computer. It’s pretty straightforward to use and in great condition.

I am on Zoom conferences multiple times per week for work.My 7 y/o acer Chromebook accessed Zoom and Skype, etc. just fine.When I tried to join my Zoom Conference for work this am i got an incompatible message saying it needed a Chrome version of at least 52.0.0.0.Now I need to return it.Big hassle.Why wasn't this explained in the description?Since it is billed as the Newest Acer Chromebook I never expected it to be outdated!!
